Off to Convention

Well it's that time of year again, it's Convention time. A time when Athletic Trainer's from all over the country and sometimes the globe come together for Alumni parties, liver punishment, and some mild educational learning. This years convention is in Anaheim, CA. I will be leaving at 6am tomorrow morning to make my way down there and will be coming back on Saturday. I will keep track of all the potential blog posts that can come from this week, I will be rooming with Laef after all. This convention will be a little different for me since I am volunteering for about 20 hours this week as well as everything I want to do during the week. And other than that let's face it my drinking stamina has fallen considerably since last year. Hope to see some of you there, and I will be thinking about those of you who are unable to attend. Have a great week!

Reading Corner

Since moving into my new apartment I as of now have not elected to start cable service, which has brought me back to reading for entertainment. I've resumed reading a book that I have been working on for oh I'd say about 3.5 years now. This is a book of monsterous proportions; a whopping 1069 pages in length! It's true that I think I read the first chapter about 5 times trying to get into this book. I am currently on page 406. What is this book that has been agonizing me for this long to even come this close to the end. It would be the one the only "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand.

So here's the scoop:
This book is the second of two books that outline her philosophy of "Objectivism". It's very wordy and has a lot of internal philosophical dialogue that I find myself trying to read, comprehend, and analyze all at the same time as to whether or not I agree with. At least I am making headway and will hopefully complete it by the time Basketball Season begins again.

Lack of blogging

Here's my excuse for not blogging lately. I moved into a new place a couple weeks ago and am boycotting creating more bills till my camp schedule gets into full swing. Please keep checking in as I will try to do a little blogging from work after the camp ends for the day.

Amy Winehouse

I maybe a little behind the times in discovering Amy Winehouse, but at least I'm not too late. I first heard her song "Rehab" on the local alternative rock station in town and immediately enjoyed the refreshing sound of her voice and the melody of the song that reminds me of the days of Motown. I previewed her album on itunes and decided to download it. Her album has been in heavy rotation for me ever since. I especially enjoy the title track "Back to Black". If you haven't already check her out!

Surreal

One of my soccer girls this morning said "It's hard to believe that my first year of college is almost over." This got me thinking about how things have been going since I left Oregon. It really is surreal to think back that just a year ago I was completing my Master's degree and looking for a job, that nobody seemed to want to give me. Somehow I managed to land in Central California and the University of California, Santa Barbara. It's been a good year, a weird year, and at times frustrating. Like my soccer player and her first year of college, I'm thinking the same thing about my first year of having a job, using my education, and doing what I enjoy. My teams were great to work with and ended their season with respectable conference finishes. I'm hoping that they do better next year. I mean, since a certain 4 grad students at UO got jipped out of a bowl game, is an NCAA tournament appearance too much to ask?
I've been fortunate enough to have met some great people while I have been down here, one of whom is very special to me and brightens my days just by the sound of their voice. I'm going to be moving into a place of my own this weekend, so yes I will be deflating the air-mattress once again. Maybe I'll get a bed next year.

It's been a pretty good year.

Here's hoping everyone else's years have been good too!

Youtube Special

It may not be great from beginning to end, but there are some great quotes and a little confirmation of what we all know!

The Ultimate Skooging?

Courtesy msnbc.com:
NEW YORK - A man has sued the maker of the health drink Boost Plus, claiming the vitamin-enriched beverage gave him an erection that would not subside and caused him to be hospitalized.

The lawsuit filed by Christopher Woods of New York said he bought the nutrition beverage made by the pharmaceutical company Novartis AG at a drugstore on June 5, 2004, and drank it.

Woods’ court papers say he woke up the next morning “with an erection that would not subside” and sought treatment that day for the condition, called severe priapism.

They say Woods, 29, underwent surgery for implantation of a Winter shunt, which moves blood from one area to another.

Good thing while at the University of Oregon we only had regular boost. As I think about it though, if this were to have happened it could have only happened to one player and it would have been an oh so dramatic story!
A story and situation that could only have happened to the one the only D. Long.

Did He Really Just Say That?

So, in my infinite search to find a decent summer replacement for The Office I happened to come across a little government access gold. So here's the scene: City Council Meeting for Santa Barabara, a young guy in a sport coat, steps to the microphone and begins to speak in response to a new rule that the Council will be voting on to apparently create a no dancing rule for downtown Santa Barbara. Normally I would have just changed the channel, but for some reason I decided to keep watching, and boy was I rewarded. This little cracker guy actually said to the Santa Barbara CIty Council and I quote "I think they made a movie about just this issue and it was called Footloose!" I mean wow, if there was ever a movie reference to sway the opinion of City officials I would definitely agree that the social commentary that is Footloose would have to be it. That Kevin Bacon he is just so political!

Got to love VW Marketing

Call me crazy, call me weird, but I think this commercial is hilarious! "Oh Snap!"

Midwest Throwback

It's that time of year again in the Midwest. It's time for the 17 year Cicada's!

There are always a few Cicada's that emerge every year in parts of the midwest but every 17 years large broods emerge that can number in the billions. The current Cicada invasion is occuring in the upper midwest in areas around Chicago. I lived through the Butler County, Ohio 17 year Cicada's back in June of 2004.

Cicada's incubate for 17 years in the ground living off tree roots until an unknown trigger causes them to emerge. Once they emerge from the ground they climb the first vertical surface they can find, molt, and spread their wings. Their left behind exo-skeletons have been known to coat fences and sides of houses.

Their life cycle only lasts for about 30 days in which they mate and die. The male cicada lures a mate by singing. This singing is most definitely not pleasant and can reach up to 90 decibles, for a little more reference they can drown out a lawnmower with their mating calls.

Most Cicadas have red eyes, but their have been eye witness accounts of blue, orange, white, green, and yellowed eyed ones as well.

To all those dealing with the Cicadas this summer I feel your pain, luckily it'll only last for 30 days!
