High Society

This past Sunday I was given the opportunity to check out the exciting world of Polo. My co-workers roommate works at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet club during Polo season as an Athletic Trainer, and got a bunch of us complimentary tickets. I went with my friend David, and we got there a little bit early to walk around. It was just how "Pretty Woman" had portrayed it; men in suits and women with big hats and heels.

A little information about the game:
- The field is 300x160 yards
- There are four players/horses on a team numbered 1-4
- Each player is ranked on a handicap system ranging from -2 (beginner) to 10 (highest rating)
- The ratings are based on skill level, horsemanship, and knowledge of the game
- The player ratings are then added together to play against teams of similar skill level
- They play 6 7 minute chukkers with 4 minutes inbetween each chukker and a 10 minute halftime between chukker 3 and 4
- Each player usually bring 8-10 horses with them for each match

During halftime is when everyone gets to go out on the field with their beverage of choice and replace the divots. Some of you may be concerned about horse manuer, but there are guys that go out after each chukker to scoop it up.

Overall it was a good experience and a fun social event. It was nice to witness something new.

I may have more stories next year, because Polo pays 50 dollars an hour for an Athletic Trainer and the season runs from April to October.

$50 an hour, but does the athletic trainer have to ride a horse too?

Good question Heather! The Athletic Trainer gets their very own golf cart to ride around in!

Greg are you thinking about changing sports. Do you also help the horse if it gets hurt, too?
Just asking, I don't know.

No worries Mom. Not a looking for a sport change, just possibly a better summer job than working summer camps. No, I wouldn't have to help the horse. Just a possibility.
